Jane in June
My friend Misty over at Book Rat (yes, she has her own label below, see below, and is tickled by that) is having a month long celebration of one of my favorite writers, Jane Austen. I just could not not participate. I remember the first time and each successive time I've read all her books. I remember scouring bookstores for anything, from unfinished stories to childhood riddles that she'd written just to get a little more Jane. I've seen, probably, almost every adaptation there is from Bollywood to Bridget. I have developed an unhealthy obsession with Andrew Davies' adaptations and have finally come to realize the greatness of Northanger Abbey. So in the spirit of the month long event I will be having posts about my introduction to the word of Jane, both good and bad, reviews, recommendations and just plain Jane! Even if she could really never be further than plain.
To kick the month off right there will be a giveaway, Austen themed of course, but a little closer to my heart than some of the other giveaways I've run. This time I'm giving away something I've created! A few years back when an undergrad, we were assigned an art project centering on the concept of a series. It could be a series of anything really, the pictures just had to relate. I decided to do a Jane Austen series. For years I'd been enamoured by the illustrations done by the Brother's Brock and thought that they needed a little updating, and a little context, and perhaps, just that little bit of femininity and color. So to work I went. This piece, from Pride and Prejudice, is entitled "It is enough to know they are discovered." For this piece I did a watercolor and gesso painting on fibrous paper that had plant particles. You could win you very own Giclee (ie, high end printed reproduction signed and number by me! You know you want my signature!) So enter here! Also be sure to check out the others in the series, all trying to capture a little more of the feeling that I think the scene conveys that the Brocks lacked.
THIS GIVEAWAY NOW CLOSED

Oh, pretty Giclee depicting a scene from Pride and Prejudice, signed and numbered!

ooo, that is absolutely gorgeous :)
Lets see...my favorite Austen is easily Persuasion, and my favorite adaptation is a close call between BBC's P&P and Persuasion.
I suppose I can't really give 2nd place to Colin Firth, so we'll go with BBC's Pride and Prejudice movie :)

Oh, it looks beautiful!
Not an easy question you asked, initially Pride and Prejudice was my favourite, then I read persuasion which I also loved (though P&P remained no.1), but then a few years ago I read and saw Emma, and I fell under its spell! So right now it's a close tie between Emma dn P&P. My favourite adaptation? Also difficult: of course I can never tire of the P&P miniseries, rewatch it every year, but I love the Kate Beckinsale and Gwyneth paltrow adaptation of Emma and Clueless too!

Bollywood!!! I should have watched Bride and Prejudice for JnJ!!! Why didn't I think of that?
Hmm, might have to see if I can work it in... Ooh, maybe for a Dinner/Movie post! I could do Indian food... (Or maybe that will be next year.)
And yes, I am tickled.
And yes, that is prettyprettyshinypretty.
I'm going to post/spotlight this w/i the next couple of days, if you don't mind.

I'd be delighted! Lots of Jane to come in the coming weeks! Hmmm, that dinner and a movie idea sounds good. You could even do a dinner guide for each of the movies. Did you ever watch the Regency House Party?

Alright, as you saw, it's linked and up (and I think people are intrigued...) Is Regency House Party the documentaryish one? If so, then I believe I have. There were a bunch of them (1900s House, Colonial House, etc) and I was OBSESSED. I recently added all of them to my Netflix queue. It's time for a revisit.
Misty said... June 6, 2010 at 5:07 PM
Thanks again for the link! yes, it was part of that series, Manor House being my fav, with 1940s house a close second. Regency House Party was of the same ilk, but all the women whined all the time that they were bored. Plus the artist Gunter Von Hagen was on, he kind of freaks me out (he's the cadaver guy).

Since I'm a newbie I'll be better able to place my entry toward the end of the month. I'll work my way through the dance card and revisit the blogs that have been a part of this. I'll be more educated then. See you soon.

Beautiful piece of artwork! I'd love to own it. Okay, get the whips out! - I've never read a Jane Austen book. So I have nothing to compare to &I have never seen a movie adaptation.

What a gorgeous, gorgeous painting! This was a very tough question. I think that Sense & Sensibility is my fave book - and Emma (with Gwyneth Paltrow) is my favorite adaptation. Thanks for offering this! Theresa (theresamacnaughton@gmail.com).

Fabulous painting! um. My favorite Austen book is a tie, I think, between Pride and Prejudice (of course!) and Mansfield Park (I'm not sure why, either) and my favorite adaption is probably the Andrew Davies Northanger Abbey (although Bride and Prejudice is a close second!)
