Murder Most Foul
Books need a hook. And what better hook than a mystery? All books have a mystery of some kind to solve, even if it's the vagaries of true love. But the best mysteries are murder mysteries. I love to play detective. Which started in earnest with a fictional character murdered on the 24th of this month over thirty years ago. I'm talking about Laura Palmer. She was found by Pete Martell, wrapped in plastic. Not only did I become obsessed with Twin Peaks I became obsessed with the murder mystery genre, even reading my mom's The Cat Who... books. I sneak a murder mystery in my to be read pile here and there and after some time, what do you know, I have enough reviews to do a little celebration on my blog. But this year in particular is important because of a book coming out next month. As you should all know by now I'm a devotee of Lauren Willig. She is without question one of my favorite authors. Known for her historical fiction and her collaborations with Team W she's doing something a little different this year. She's written a book based on the first recorded murder trial in the United States, the Manhattan Well Murder Trial of 1800. It wasn't just sensational because of the court transcript, it was sensational because the man on trial, Levi Weeks, was represented in court by Aaron Burr, Henry Brockholst Livingston, and Alexander Hamilton. And as Lauren was wont to say while working on the book, Brockholst is still waiting for his musical. I mean, the least Lin-Manuel Miranda could have done is mentioned him in the song "Non-Stop," but no. The ball's in your court to right this wrong Lin-Manuel! And right there you have your hook, not Brickholst Livingston being overlooked, but that loaded defense. The fact that Levi Weeks was acquitted and the murder was never solved, well, I know you feel the need to learn more right? Well, it's not long until The Girl from Greenwich Street will be out in the world, so I say, in honor to this achievement, let's raise a hopefully non poisoned class in Lauren's honor and in honor of all the great murder mysteries that came before. There are quite a few doozies featured over the next four months here on my blog. I hope you enjoy the thrill of the hunt as much as I do.
