Knowledge is carnage, you can't have it without sacrifice. They were meant to kill one of their own. So obviously it was going to be Callum. He's too dangerous and too annoying. The problem is, the sacrifice had to actually mean something, which meant that Tristan was to do the deed. And he just couldn't. Callum really meant something to him. Which didn't fit in with Atlas Blakely's plans. Callum was chosen from the very beginning to die. He was the sacrifice. But instead Libby died. So the library got it's pound of flesh and the six became five. Though they're all having trouble trusting each other what with the fallout from the murder plot. Old alliances were destroyed and new alliances were forged. And Atlas's plans imploded all because of Libby's ex Ezra Fowler. Ezra, unbeknownst to Libby, can travel in time and is technically a lot older than her. He was one of the six candidates chosen the year Atlas was an initiate. They were the best of friends and to this day he is Atlas's confidant. They thought the same and shared the same goals, to take down the society from within and replace it with an organization that would allow access to all. To let the knowledge be widely distributed not hoarded away. Once they learned that one of their number would have to die the two of them formulated their plan. They would fake Ezra's death and he would jump forward in time while Atlas worked from the inside. Only without a sacrifice there were unintended consequences. Everyone in their year died. Except Atlas and Ezra. Ezra was safely in the future and Atlas pleased the library by becoming it's caretaker and therefore it let him live. The flaw in their plan soon became obvious. Atlas grew over the intervening years and changed what he wished to do. Whereas Ezra was still the Ezra that was first approached by the Alexandrian Society. When Ezra realizes that Atlas no longer cares about access and wants to undo the past, something Ezra knows is impossible, he fakes Libby's death and secrets her away in 1989. He does not want the Society to destroy the world, which is very much something that could happen if Atlas gets his way. But Ezra doesn't count on Libby's tenacity and her friends' obsession with finding her. Nico would know in his bones if she were dead, they are two halves of a whole. He never fell for her "death" and has been determined to find her. And, eventually, they do. She's been busy in the past. The only problem is to bring her home would come at the loss of many lives. Can Libby live with herself if she does what she needs to do? Can the world survive if they reunite and listen to Atlas? And will the library claim it's pound of flesh now that they are all still alive in the present?

So, after reading the first volume I kind of thought that there is no way this series is going to turn out to be as divisive as I kept hearing. I will fully admit I was wrong. The decline in quality between The Atlas Six and The Atlas Paradox is almost incomprehensible. What had some structure now is nothing more than fanfics colliding at the speed of light, here's some Outlander, here's some Dark Materials, here's some Dark Phoenix. Oh, and just for fun, here's some pretentious preaching reminiscent of the worst parts of Sophie's World. And yet, it might have worked. Maybe. Possibly. I'm trying to not trash fanfic or fanfic adjacent here because if you're a good writer you can make that work. You just have to have the right characters and the right plot and not you know almost four pages of nothing. Here's the thing. I truly believe this in my heart of hearts and it's my personal headcanon. When Tor was negotiating the rights to publish this series it was originally written as a duology. But Tor went, hey Olivie Blake, we're only buying trilogies at the moment and she promptly said, I can do that! And what followed is four hundred pages where nothing happens. OK, that's a little unfair. There's angst and philosophy and moral dilemmas but that's just the air of ennui this series exudes. For actual plot points Libby gets back to the present. Oh and Ezra tries to kill the remaining five of the six, but that's so half-hearted that I don't know why I'm mentioning it. So the entire plot is get Libby back to the present. That could have been handled into a single chapter. Maybe, possibly two. In other words, it could have happened at the end of The Atlas Six or, if you wanted to maintain the cliffhanger, at the beginning of The Atlas Complex. The Atlas Paradox does not need to exist. Wait, is that the paradox of the book? No. It couldn't be. That would be too clever and I won't give the author that much credit. Though lovers of this book, the two of you out there, will say that we needed this book so we could have Libby Rhodes's corruption arc. She had to go all evil villain. AKA Dark Phoenix. And, I'm sorry. But no. It was stupid. She chose herself and her potential over countless lives. She could have stayed in the past, but it was her potential in the future, at that point in time with those people that was more important than the lives lost. She blew up a nuclear power plant to get home. She's a bitchier Oppenheimer, destroyer of worlds. And ironically she's going into the future to destroy worlds as well with Altas's plan. But then again, this book is all about people choosing ignorance over knowledge and the six are the most ignorant of all.

But while Janice may be surprised by the changes that the tourists (and their money) have brought to her beloved islands, very little surprises Lily.

The official patter:
"When a mysterious figure shows up in the photograph an architect takes of the derelict Seabrink Hotel, ghostly encounters and murder are unleashed.

Aubrey Spencer loves photographing classic old buildings and abandoned places that hold old secrets. The Hotel Seabrink, perched overlooking the sea, is one such place. Currently abandoned but scheduled for a major renovation, it has a torrid history. Back in the 1920s it hosted A-list celebrity clientele, and now the locals insist it is haunted by the ghosts of two young women who died there. When Aubrey goes to photograph the site before the renovation begins, she bumps into a man named Dimitri Petroff, a minor online celebrity who shares her fascination with old buildings, the Hotel Seabrink in particular.

When he is found dead the next day at the base of a cliff, the police are quick to close the investigation. But Aubrey feels unsettled by locals who claim he was murdered and that it's not the first time someone interested in the hotel was killed. As she digs deeper into the property's dark history (and its origins as an asylum) as well as Dimitri's professional rivalries, she becomes mired in an unsolved murder case from several decades earlier, one with eerie parallels to the contemporary case. But someone is determined to keep her from discovering the truth - at any cost."

"As spiritualism reaches its fevered pitch at the dawn of the 20th century, a Scottish girl crosses the veil to unlock a powerful connection within an infamous asylum in this thrillingly atmospheric, exquisitely evocative exploration of feminine rage and agency for readers of Sarah Penner, Alice Hoffman, and Hester Fox.

Leaving behind a quiet life of simple comforts, Nairna Liath traverses the Scottish countryside with her charlatan father, Tavish. From remote cottages to rural fairs, the duo scrapes by on paltry coins as Tavish orchestrates "encounters" with the departed, while Nairna interprets tarot cards for those willing to pay for what they wish to hear.

But beyond her father's trickery, Nairna possesses a genuine gift for communicating with the spirit world, one that could get an impoverished country girl branded a witch. A talent inherited from her grandmother, Lottie Liath, widow of a Welsh coalminer, whose story of imprisonment and exploitation in a notorious asylum is calling out to Nairna from four decades past - a warning to break free from the manipulations, greed, and betrayals of others.

What do the cards hold for Nairna's future?

Rescued from homelessness by a well-connected stranger, Nairna is whisked into a new life among Edinburgh's elite Spiritualist circle, including visiting American star Dorothy Kellings. Researchers, doctors, psychics, and thrill-seekers clamor for the rising young medium. But after a séance with blood-chilling results, a shocking scandal ensues, and Nairna flees to a secluded community near Boston, where she assumes a new identity: Nora Grey.

But Nora can't stay hidden when Dorothy Kellings offers her the chance to face all comers and silence skeptics at a spectacular séance at Boston's Old South Meeting Hall, where Nora will come face to face at last with her spiritual guide: the courageous Lottie Liath, whose heart-wrenching story and profound messages are indelibly tied to Nora's destiny."

Kiernan can deliver. Among the collection's twenty-five tales are a dying woman's communion with the dying sea ("Strandling"), childhood recollections of a sky filled with rattlesnakes ("Crotalus"), to a loathsome couple with a far more loathsome secret ("L'homme et la femme terribles"), these are stories that pull no punches and demand that your preconceptions of genre should be checked before the book's covers are even cracked. The official patter:
"For fans of The Night Circus, this sweeping historical fantasy set in a lush, Puerto Rico-inspired world, uses magical realism to combine Caribbean carnaval culture and the mythology of the Taíno - the Indigenous people of the region - in a gripping exploration of community, reclamation, and healing in defiance of a violent past.

When night descends, el Carnaval de Bestias rises.

Within the shores of Isla Bestia, guests from around the world discover a utopia of ever-changing performances, sumptuous feasts and beautiful monsters. Many enter, but few ever leave - the wine is simply too sweet, the music too fine and the revelry endless.

Sofía, a freedwoman from a nearby colonized island, cares little for this revelry. Born an enslaved mestiza on a tobacco plantation, she has neither wealth nor title, only a scholarly pragmatism and a hunger for answers. She travels to el Carnaval de Bestias in search of her twin brother, who disappeared five years ago.

There's a world of wonder waiting for her on the shores of this legendary island, one wherein conquerors profit from Sofia's ancestral lands and her people's labor. But surrounded by her former enslavers, she finds something familiar in the performances - whispers of the island's native tongue, music and stories from her Taike'ri ancestors...a culture long hidden in the shadows, thrust into the light.

As the nights pass, her mind begins unraveling, drowning in the unnatural, almost sentient thrall of Carnaval. And the sense that someone is watching her grows. To find her brother and break free, Sofia must peel back the glamorous curtain and face those behind Carnaval, before she too loses herself to the island..."

It's like the Fae of Northern Europe. They intoxicate and delight and are oh so deadly.

The official patter:
"For readers of Victor LaValle, Tananarive Due, Stephen Graham Jones, and Colson Whitehead's The Underground Railroad, this ingenious reimagining of the vampire origin story set during the early days of American slavery blends alternate history with supernatural horror, as the last surviving member of an ancient African vampire tribe meets a slave desperate for freedom, and together, they lead an army of enslaved people in a cinematically blood-soaked battle for freedom and revenge.

What if nobody ever freed the slaves...because they freed themselves - 150 years before the Civil War?

In the Province of Carolina, 1710, freedom seems unattainable for Willie, for his beloved Gertie, and for their unborn child. They live, suffer, and toil under their brutal master, James "Big Jim" Barrow, whose grand plantation was built by the blood, sweat, and tears of the enslaved. To flee this hell on earth is be hunted and killed. Until one strange night Willie is offered a dark hope by Rafazi, an enigmatic slave with an irresistible and blood-chilling path to liberation.

Hailing from the Kingdom of Ghana, Rafazi is the lone survivor of the Ramanga, an African vampire tribe rendered nearly extinct by plague. Rafazi has roamed the world for centuries with an undying desire to replenish the power that once defined his heritage. In Willie, Rafazi has found his first biddable subject to be turned and to help in a hungry revolt. And Willie desires nothing more than to free his people from malicious bondage. Whatever it takes.

One by one, as an army of blood slaves thirsting for revenge is gathered, the headstrong Gertie fears that no good can come from the vampiric legacy that courses through Rafazi's veins. Willie knows that only evil can fight evil. And when the woman he loves stands between the reemergence of the Ramanga and the justified slaughter of the oppressors, Willie must make an irreversible decision. Only one thing is certain: on the Barrow plantation, and beyond, blood will spill.

Part historical drama, part supernatural horror, and part alternate history, Blood Slaves is an ingenuous and defiant new creation myth of the vampire, one rooted in both justice and the sometimes - violent means necessary to achieve it."

That cover illustration so perfectly captures the essence of this book. You know what you're about to read.

Yeah, I feel for Neil. I too want to move to a remote island lately.

Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands by Heather Fawcett

Cambridge professor, Emily Wilde, PhD, MPhil, BSc, Dde, tenured, is back and this time she's going to be the one doing the rescuing! Because the Folk are calling again. And their intent is deadly. Emily and Bambleby are back at Cambridge teaching. She's now a published author with tenor and a much more spacious office that gives her a little distance from Wendell. After all she hasn't decided yet if she'll accept his marriage proposal. He is deposed faerie royalty and that is problematic. Especially when his stepmother sends several assassins after him. The attack during one of his lectures does rather out him as one of the Folk. Thankfully only one person was paying attention. But it couldn't have been a worse person to have witnessed it. The Department Head of Dryadology, Dr. Farris Rose. One doesn't know if he's angry at his own ignorance or at the danger that has been lurking nearby for his entire tenure since his predecessor was abducted by a bogle in the Hebrides. One thing is clear, he's willing to help Emily get Bambleby back to his realm as fast as possible. Which means it's time to put Emily's theory about a back door, a nexus, used by the common fae that courtly fae are unaware of, to the test. Plus it will be invaluable to her new project, a mapbook of the faerie realms. Emily believes she has located a nexus in the Alps, specifically the village of St. Liesl in western Austria. The reasoning behind this is that the famous dryadologist Danielle de Grey mysteriously disappeared there over fifty years ago while investigating fauns in the region. Tree fauns that are unique to Wendell's realm. And getting Wendell home is more dire than ever because he's losing control of his powers. It turns out that the attack on his lecture wasn't the only attempt on his life. His stepmother has also poisoned him. And on his birthday no less! Has she no decency!?! So the expedition to the Alps is happening immediately, and Bambleby and Emily won't be alone. Dr. Farris Rose has spent years studying the Folk of the Alps, he convinces them they need his expertise. This is not exactly a magnanimous gesture. He sees it as a way to help Emily and get ride of Wendell. Plus, he's willing to live with a lapse in ethics in exchange for answers to the great scientific mysteries of our times. And then there's Emily's niece, Ariadne. The brightest student Emily has ever taught with an impressive alacrity for getting what she wants, like being included on this excursion and being Emily's assistant. They are in for a dangerous adventure. The townsfolk of St. Liesl warn them that the night is full of dangers and the kingdom they are searching for has had a disproportionate number of disappearances. But it's their only option if they are to save Wendell. If they're lucky perhaps they will solve the disappearance of de Grey as well. If they're unlucky they may never be heard from again.

Oh my, I don't know when I've enjoyed a book so much recently. And while I love Emily and Bambleby and all the new characters, even Dr. Rose, my heart is in it for Danielle de Grey. The very idea of folklorists becoming folklore brings a smile to my face. To be out there, searching for the answers, theories of trade routes connecting faerie realms, and to just disappear. To have all your research, everything about you overshadowed by your disappearance. And yet this doesn't diminish her reputation, she was known as an irreverent character who has become something of a folk hero. An enduring legend of dryadology, and here is Emily accidentally solving the mystery while trying to help Wendell. Because while it was thought that she had become lost in the Otherlands, an old name for the faerie realms, she was trapped in the borderlands, wandering the edges of different overlapping realms where time lost all meaning. Which is why spottings of her around St. Liesl show her at different ages. She's in a fluid and amorphous fog enshrouded land where she can appear at any age. Was she even being seen or was she some echo imprinted on the wind? What's more, the love of her life, a fellow professor, Bran Eichorn, disappeared in 1862 searching for her in the environs of St. Liesl. He too was lost to the borderlands, forever searching for her. It was he that Emily first encountered. There was some connection between the two of them, perhaps the foot that Emily nicked that used to belong to de Grey. But he understands what she is trying to do and attempts to convince her that finding Dani is the answer. Emily can't be sure if this is altruistic or not. But just the idea of these two lovers walking through the mist for over half a century calling out to one another is so Bronte-esque that I can't help but love every second of their apparently doomed romance. Thankfully things end for them better than they did for Cathy and Heathcliff. But then again, it's not like any ending could be worse than there's now can it? Just the whole vibe here made me want to go to the Alps and hide in a cottage and wander through the fog, but only during daylight hours while being tethered to an immobile stricture. What I also find interesting is that in reading about Eichorn and de Grey's relationship, they were unmarried but lived together in the 1860s. Were the social mores of this world that different from ours? Was it because she was viewed as irreverent that this was allowed? Or was it because she was a professor? Or is it because of the interaction between the human realm and the faerie realm creating different sexual mores due to what's been observed? I mean, Emily and Bambleby are at it in a tent and I have to ask, is this socially permissible? Because I love everything about this world and if they are a lot less prudish and "Victorian," well, all the better!

Book Review - Rebecca Yarros's Iron Flame

Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros

Publication Date: November 7th, 2023
Format: Hardcover, 640 Pages
Rating: ★★★★★

Everything Violet Sorrengail has ever known is a lie, even the fact that her brother Brennan was dead. She thought folklore was just that. Folklore. Tales to tell your children to behave or else the venin will come and get you. Only the tales about the venin are real. Dark Wielders who draw their power directly from the source, not from a bond with a dragon or gryphon. And she's seen what they can do. She almost died because of them. And her ignorance could have gotten her killed. But now it's her knowledge that is just as dangerous. Because she knows the real reason behind the Tyrrish Rebellion. Tyrrendor wanted to secede from Navarre so that they could join Poromiel in the fight against the venin. And Tyrrendor still plans to fight. Aretia wasn't destroyed as everyone was told. It's still the seat of the revolution. And Xaden Riorson is one of a seven member assembly leading the revolt, along with Violet's brother, Brennan. But the revolution needs continued access to Basgiath to arm themselves. So Violet must return to the War College and pretend that everything is fine, that her mother, the great General Lilith Sorrengail, hasn't been lying to her and the people of Navarre for years in order to protect Navarre at the expense of others. And on top of everything Violet is having dragon issues. Her dragon Tairn is bonded to Xaden's dragon Sgaeyl and Xaden has been assigned to the front, so much of their time is making sure the bonded pair gets to spend as much time as possible together, damn the inconvenience to their riders. Also Violet's bonus dragon Andarna is going through some changes and is laying low. The lie that they fabricated to cover up their run-in with venin means that the new Vice Commandant, Varrish, is suspicious of them. Suspicions that he acts upon in cruel and unusual ways, from trying to keep Sgaeyl and Tairn apart to inflicting punishments on Violet when she won't produce Andarna at his command. The breaking point though is when Varrish literally almost breaks Violet with five days of torture. Violet staged a raid into the archives to get information on the history of Basgiath and the First Six and how to replicate Navarre's wards. Needless to say an extreme interrogation session wasn't the outcome she had hoped for. But her eventual escape means that Basgiath is no longer safe. The revolutionaries, those who know or have come to know the truth, flee to Aretia and Riorson House. There they continue the education of the riders while also engaging in diplomatic talks with Poromiel. But even with allies the enemy grows closer and those closest to Violet still have secrets. Will Navarre survive or will they fall? It all depends on Violet and the secret knowledge she has gleaned.

This book is just bonkers in the best possible way. I mean, some of the things, I just can't. It's too absurd but at the same time totally makes sense to the characters. The gryphon riders legitimately call the dragon riders out on their barbaric practices and how they commit wholesale slaughter of their students and everyone from Basgiath is like, no, that's totally normal right? Kill the weak and all that. Why would you let someone survive? And the gryphon riders are all like, you're mental, OK? And you know what, they are mental, and I love them for it. A large chunk of the student population abandons Basgiath to join the revolution in Aretia and what's the first thing they do? No, they don't assign them jobs or ways in which to help the war effort, they open up their own school. They literally start schooling people in the middle of a war. Damn. I love these idiots. You really just have to embrace the chaos that is contained within the pages of these books. Because if you start to question anything, well, that way insanity lies. Like, how do they have the same months as us? Really. I kind of need to know. Because August is named after Emperor Augustus, the Roman leader, and well... There's no Rome here if you get my drift. And I'm not talking about a drift of gryphons! And you know, no Latin so no October. It doesn't matter that the first of that month is Threshing! Because I don't know how they have that month. But as is my motto with these books, embrace the chaos. These are basically teenagers riding around on giant siege monsters, so, well, suspend your disbelief. Because it's like this, no matter the fantastical in the fantasy genre it's the distilled truths that are brought to the forefront that make this genre more real, more human, than any other genre. What I really connected to is the bond forged between rider and dragon. And while you could say it's more a bond of never-ending friendship to me it's deeper. It's the bond between a human and their beloved pet. The soulmating of a person and a little ball of fur, or in this case a big ball of scales. If you've never experienced this kind of love just read Andarna's speech at the end of Iron Flame. Yes, it might decimate you, and it left me a wreck and in tears, but it's about choice and how you chose your person. Andarna waited for Violet for 650 years. She heard the elders talk of a girl with the mind of a scribe and the heart of a rider and she knew that that girl would be hers. I get teary just thinking about that. About finding your soulmate, picking your destiny, and love. Because in the end that's what this book is about, love.

Tuesday Tomorrow

Ink Ribbon Red by Alex Pavesi
Published by: Henry Holt and Co.
Publication Date: July 22nd, 2025
Format: Hardcover, 320 Pages
To Buy

The official patter:
"A wickedly plotted new thriller, in which a group of friends play a deadly game that unwraps a motive for murder, from Alex Pavesi, the author of The Eighth Detective.

Anatol invites five of his oldest friends to his family home in the Wiltshire countryside to celebrate his thirtieth birthday. At his request, they play a game of his invention called Motive Method Death. The rules are simple: Everyone chooses two players at random, then writes a short story in which one kills the other.

Points are awarded for making the murders feel real. Of course, it's only natural for each friend to use what they know. Secrets. Grudges. Affairs. But once they've put it in a story, each secret is out. It's not long before the game reawakens old resentments and brings private matters into the light of day. With each fictional crime, someone new gets a very real motive.

Can all six friends survive the weekend, or will truth turn out to be deadlier than fiction?"

Oh yes, bring on Motive Method Death! A decidedly literary thriller.

The official patter:
"Years after her best friend mysteriously disappeared from a remote New England island, a young woman returns in search of answers in this atmospheric and scintillating thriller from Jessa Maxwell, nationally bestselling author of the "deliciously entertaining" (Sarah Penner, New York Times bestselling author) The Golden Spoon.

Orla O'Connor hasn't been to the isolated New England enclave of Hadley Island since she graduated from high school a decade ago. As a teenager, her best friend Alice disappeared from its shores without a trace - but with plenty of rumors.

Now, Orla returns to her family's beachfront home to clean it out before her parents sell it. The island and her best friend's house next door, abandoned after her family left in grief, are stirring up memories she would like to avoid. Then there are the locals, always gossiping and watching Orla's every move. Worst of all, David, Orla's childhood crush and son of a wealthy Manhattan family, is back for the summer with his new, impossibly pretty girlfriend, Faith.

Faith suspects that David is going to propose but as soon as she settles into his family's sprawling Hadley Island estate, she feels out of place. She anticipated a luxurious summer of fun and romance, but David is never around - lured into business conversations with his entrepreneur father from dawn to dusk. With nothing else to do, Faith begins to investigate the island's dark past, curious about what really happened to Alice all those years ago.

Meanwhile, local Henry hasn't left his house since the young girl went missing, in an attempt to let the accusations against him die down. Except they never have. For years, Henry has had an endless supply of time to pursue his only hobby, watching the island from his telescope and recording the activities of its inhabitants. But Orla's return has shaken him and lately he's been seeing strange things: shadowy figures walking on the beach in the middle of the night and a light on in the upstairs window of the long-abandoned house of the missing girl.

When there's another disappearance on the island, all three find themselves pulled into an eerie and twisty mystery that will haunt them for the rest of their lives."

I mean, wasn't the mystery already haunting two of the trio?

The official patter:
"An eerie, hypnotic debut about friendship, desire, and memory set against the sultry backdrop of Florida's swamplands.

It's been years since Ingrid has heard from her childhood best friend, Mayra, a fearless rebel who fled their hometown of Hialeah, a Cuban neighborhood just west of Miami, for college in the Northeast. But when Mayra calls out of the blue to invite Ingrid to a weekend getaway at a house in the Everglades, she impulsively accepts.

From the moment Ingrid sets out, danger looms: The directions are difficult, she's out of reach of cell service, and as she drives deeper into the Everglades, the wet maw of the swamp threatens to swallow her whole. But once Ingrid arrives, Mayra is, in many ways, just as she remembers - with her sharp tongue and effortless, seductive beauty, still thumbing her nose at the world.

Before they can fully settle into the familiar intimacy of each other's company, their reunion is spoiled by the reemergence of past disagreements and the unexpected presence of Mayra's new boyfriend, Benji. The trio spend their hours eating lavish meals and exploring the labyrinthine house, which holds as much mystery as the swamp itself. Indoors and on the grounds, time itself seems to expand, and Ingrid begins to lose a sense of the outside world, and herself.

Against this disquieting setting, where lizards dart in and out of porches and alligators peek from dark waters, Gonzalez weaves a surreal, unforgettable story about the dizzying power of early friendship and the lengths we'll go to earn love and acceptance - even at the risk of losing ourselves entirely."

Oh so Southern Gothic!

Snared in her terrible web, Inspector Bartholomew Sloan - her eternal nemesis - watches her wreak havoc in helpless horror, shackled by his own guilt and Venita's unrelenting wrath.

Now the house has yet another new owner. This time it's Ronnie Mitchell, a grieving woman who buys the run-down place sight unseen. She arrives armed with an unexpected inheritance, a strong background in renovation, and a blissful ignorance regarding the house's blood-soaked history.
